A six-panel folding screen (rokkyoku byōbu) depicting a palace with autumn grasses, from The Tale of Genji.

Tosa school, Edo period (1615-1868).Ink, colour, gold leaf and gold dust on paper, mounted with a brocade border within a black lacquered frame.

With a label to the reverse inscribed 土佐光則筆 六曲屏風 壱双之内 (Tosa Mitsunori hitsu, rokkyoku byōbu issō no uchi) 'By the brush of Tosa Mitsunori, a six-panel screen, one of a pair' and 源氏物語 秋草ノ邸図 (Genji monogatari, akikusa no yashiki zu) 'The Tale of Genji: a residence with autumn grasses'.

  • Dimensions: 170 cm high by 390 cm wide when fully unfolded, flat. Outer leaves: 64 cm wide each. Inner leaves: 63 cm wide each. Depth of each leaf: 2 cm
