Falkenbergs Belysning

Falkenbergs Belysning

Sweden

Falkenbergs Belysning was one of the quiet pillars of Swedish lighting in the mid-twentieth century. From its base in the town of Falkenberg, on Sweden's west coast, it produced table lamps, floor lamps, wall lights and pendants of understated elegance, pairing polished brass with warm natural materials such as oak, pine, rattan and leather. Its collaborations with leading Swedish architects, among them Helge Zimdal and Peter Celsing, gave rise to some of the most distinctive lighting of the Scandinavian Modern era, and its pieces are today widely appreciated for their craftsmanship and their timeless, functional beauty.

Falkenbergs Belysning took its name from the town in which it was based, in the province of Halland. Through the decades of its greatest activity, from the 1950s to the 1970s, it produced a broad range of domestic lighting characterised by fine workmanship and a restrained, often minimal aesthetic. Brass was its signature material, worked into slender stems, perforated shades and louvred forms that reflect and diffuse the light. It was frequently combined with turned oak or pine, rattan, copper, glass, rosewood and stems or details wrapped in leather.

Much of its production was designed anonymously within the firm and identified by model numbers, but Falkenbergs also called on prominent architects. Helge Zimdal designed for it the pendant known as Löken, "the Onion", a sculptural shade in solid brass that became one of the firm's best-known models. Peter Celsing, the architect of Stockholm's Kulturhuset, created for Falkenbergs the Band wall light, a graphic composition in brass. In the 1970s the firm's range evolved towards more technical designs, including articulated desk lamps.

Falkenbergs lamps typically bear the stamp "Falkenbergs Belysning Sweden", and the firm's production is represented in Swedish museum collections, such as that of the Kalmar läns museum, a measure of how thoroughly its lighting became part of the everyday Swedish interior of the post-war years.
